Gitanjali Rao is only who selected from 5,000 nominees and featured on the cover of Time magazine as ‘first ever kid of the year‘ on the latest edition. Actress Angelina Jolie interviewed her over zoom video chat, gitanjali spoke about her journey to resolving issues ranging from contaminated water to opioid addiction and cyberbullying using technology.
At the age of 11, Rao worked on flint water crisis and developed a device which is based on carbon nanotubes sensor technology that detect lead percentage in water. The device called ‘Tethys‘ which consist of a Bluetooth extension, a 9- volt battery, a disposable lead sensing unit and a processor. The device detect and send the value of water status – ‘safe ‘, ‘slightly contaminated ‘ and ‘critical ‘ via Bluetooth to smartphone. She associated with the research team of 3M (a company work on health care and public safety). She won the 3M Young Scientist challenge and also $25,000 prize money.
Gitanjali also developed an app and chrome extension called ‘Kindly‘ which helps to reduce cyberbullying. It is based on artificial intelligence which detect cyberbullying at early stage.
Rao haven’t stopped here, she innovated an AI equipped device called Epione which helps to diagnose opioid addiction at an initial stage.
